Chapter 10

Possibilities raced through my mind, and my eidolons’ excitement crashed through me like a wave.

The Mist Hare was connected to my crossbow. Who knew what powerful, ancient magic would be unlocked if I reunited her with her weapon?

I couldn’t fucking wait to find out, and it added a whole new level of urgency to saving her from Adam’s clutches.

“So, where’s the fucking Mist Hare?” the graverobber growled.

“In a town called Asheville,” I replied in a bored voice. “I don’t think you’d know it. She’s still with Adam. It wasn’t very smart of you to lose her like that, was it?”

“I didn’t lose her!” the graverobber snarled. “He fucking stole her! She was mine.”

“Hmmmm,” I hummed. “That’s funny. I thought she belonged to all four of you.”

I knew perfectly well that wasn’t possible, but all three of the other graverobbers had spoken of the eidolon as belonging to the group.

“She was always mine!” the graverobber yelled. “I just used her to help the others sometimes.”

“Exactly, you used her,” I muttered. “And now you’ve lost her. Assholes like you don’t deserve eidolons.”

The graverobber let out a roar of frustration and threw himself wildly at me with his club above his head.

But instead of dancing back like he’d expected, in a flash, I raised my shield and hit him so hard in the face, he stumbled back several steps.

“Fucker!” he growled and brought his hand up to his bloodied nose.

“How did Adam get the eidolon from you?” I asked.

“He befriended us,” the graverobber shouted. “He told us about another world, a better world. Somewhere called Earth that wasn’t covered with fucking jungle. I know you come from there, and I know that’s where Asheville is. Take me to the thieving bastard!”

“You’ve gotta be fucking joking,” I laughed. “Why would I do that? It’s not my job to fix your carelessness.”

“Adam stole my eidolon when I was sleeping!” the graverobber growled. “He drugged me so I wouldn’t wake up, then he took the Mist Hare from me! I wasn’t being fucking careless.”

“Sucks to be you.” I shrugged. “Guess you have to work on being such a gullible moron.”

That was the last straw for the graverobber, and he lunged at me like a man possessed. He raised his ugly club above his head, and he brought it down with enough force to crack my skull open.

But I was much faster and way more agile than he was, and with a split second to spare, I jumped out of the way and bolted behind the big bastard.

He grunted with frustration as the spikes of his club embedded themselves into the ground rather than my head. He strained against the weapon, but he’d put so much force behind the swing, he couldn’t pull it out of the earth again.

I laughed as he struggled, then I raised my sword high above my right shoulder and swung with all my might.

A moment before the weapon sunk into the flesh of his huge back, the graverobber turned.

He’d evidently given
